Early Childhood Additional assistants required for Kindergarten Inclusion Support program

The AEU has been advocating for additional support or redirection of funding for Kindergarten Inclusion Support (KIS) packages. We know there is a workforce shortage in this space, and we are continuing to have frequent conversations with the department and the state government about ways these shortages can be addressed.

In the interim, this is the advice all early childhood providers will have received from the department:

We understand some kindergartens with approved KIS packages are experiencing difficulty sourcing approved additional assistants from the relevant KIS provider. Funded kindergarten services in receipt of KIS are reminded of the following:

KIS additional assistants for approved applications should be placed in a kindergarten by the relevant KIS provider.

If the KIS provider is unable to allocate/place a KIS additional assistant in a reasonable timeframe, kindergarten services can request to use their own, or recruit their own, additional assistant by entering into a subcontracting arrangement with the KIS provider. KIS providers shouldn’t refuse any reasonable requests for subcontracting where they cannot supply an additional assistant.

Subcontracting will only be considered in the above circumstances, and requests to use your centre’s own staff cannot be made when submitting a KIS application.

Please contact your local Early Childhood Improvement branch if you continue to experience difficulties in securing appropriate additional assistant coverage.

For further information on the KIS program and to find the KIS provider contact details, visit Kindergarten Inclusion Support: www.vic.gov.au/kindergarten-inclusion-children-disabilities.

If you follow these guidelines and your employer refuses to recruit their own additional assistant, please contact the AEU Member Support Centre on 1800 238 842 or [email protected].
