For everyone Book review: The Palestine Laboratory

The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel exports the technology of occupation around the world by Antony Loewenstein

Australian-Jewish author Antony Loewenstein’s latest award-winning book is a groundbreaking investigation into the way Israel has, for more than 50 years, used the occupied Palestinian territories as the testing ground for its industrial-military complex.

Lowenstein details how, as part of its control of dehumanised ‘enemy’ populations in Gaza and the West Bank, Israel tests its high-tech weaponary and surveillance then exported to 130 countries around the world – including the world’s most brutal dictatorships.

By positioning itself as a key ally on the ‘war on terror’, the author asserts that Israel has achieved unparalleled political and diplomatic power, insulating it from criticism, promoting militant nationalism, and weaponising antisemitism to delegitimise any backlash.

Even more harrowing in the current context, Lowenstein describes the use of footage of the IDF targetting Palestinians and destroying their neighbourhoods in promotional videos showcasing weapons in action so they can be deemed ‘battle tested’. Essential reading.
